In Amos 5:21-24, the people were “playing religion.” They thought the formula was, “religious activities + generous gifts to God = A happy God.” But they were wrong. I believe the scathing rebuke in verses 21-23 might’ve helped them hear verse 24, where Amos said poetically, “But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” God wants justice to flow like a mighty river that cleanses society of evil and refreshes everything it touches, like a good rain. Aristotle said, “People become house builders through building houses, harp players through playing the harp. We become just by doing things which are just.” Only an outer evidence of our inner righteousness shows a right relationship with the Lord.
